U13's Season Review 2008/2009

5th May 2009

Twin Oaks Season Review.

All in all the last year has been hopefully one of enjoyment, which when combined with much endeavour resulted in significant success. A year over which both James and I have felt your confidence levels have grown.

It was important last summer to reach the finals of the 6 a side tournaments at Worthing and Hurstpierpoint, Semi Finals at Furngate, going unbeaten at Felpham, and finally winning Faygate, as well as an excellent pre season tournament at Old Coulsdon where again we reached the semi finals beating a number of Tandridge League sides.

We then commenced the new season playing football as it should be played with flair and finesse. Many compliments have been paid to the way we have played the game over the season by opposition managers commenting upon our use of the ball and the confidence that we have in each and every players ability.

There have been one or two poor performances, Storrington away comes to mind, even then we dug deep to bring the game back to a draw from 2-0 down.

The best performance was by all accounts the second half against Billingshurst away, where we came back from 2-0 down and some strange linesman decisions to win 6-2.

Amongst my favourite moments I would suggest George scoring a hat-trick, Jason performing superbly in attack at Broadbridge Heath, a double penalty save from Matt, some lovely individual skills from Lewis, and seeing Elliot at full tilt and overlapping.

Some might say that we have played in a league which was not to the standard of the Mid Sussex last year. Having seen the standard of both leagues I would agree that some of the sides we have played have not been up to scratch. I would however say that we have been one of five teams in our league that are now on a par with anyone in the area and we can match anyone now in terms of our play. Only Copthorne have literally been stronger than us, but not better in terms of technique.

See what your parents say; they too have been impressed and enjoyed some wonderful passes, superb shots, and fabulous goals both individual and team. I would like to thank your parents for their support of the team. There’s nothing better than discussing a moment from the game and marvelling at how good you are after the game. So I hope that those that have supported us will continue to do so and that we might encourage those who have not been to not miss what is a precious and proud moment in your son’s life.

I would also like to thank Mark L and Mark S, Gary, and Phil for stepping up to the plate and running the line. This is a thankless task which both James and I appreciate greatly as it enables us to do what we like best - shouting at the boys!

Sometimes we place too much emphasis on the goal scorers and goals, when we should also glory in the magnificent save keeping us in the game, the superbly timed last ditch tackle that stops the attack, the short or long pass which shows vision and calculation, the twist and turn that loses a marker, all of which go to make this game a work of art.

Shortly we will have our presentation evening when individuals will be rewarded. This should not hide the fact that the only reason those individuals that win the prizes have been able to do so is down to the TEAM, whose efforts build a significant platform for others to thrive upon.

Next season will be tougher and we will need to ensure that we maintain our standards at all times to compete.

We must all try to improve our technique and fitness and never assume that we are as good as we can be. We must all listen, watch, and learn. As someone once said, "If you fail to prepare then prepare to fail". I would rather finish on the adage that "the more you practice the luckier you'll get".

Congratulations to you all on your season, you have all been winners this year and may next season be just as successful.
