Worthing Minors

Another day for which I dressed for rain (thanks Steve) and got sun burn. However I feel it was all worth while and I hope all involved felt the same.

After a very slow start having lost the first game to Hove Riverdale 1-0 probably where a draw would have been a fairer result. They were a good side all the same.

Following this were two draws with Worthing Rebels, and Adur both 0-0. Realization I think hit us that if we were to progress we needed to push the ball about a little more and start scoring. At last we scored after weeks of nagging Matt to keep his throwing short he launched a long throw down pitch to Sam who after some excellent interchanges scored our first goal of the day. Thank heavens Matt ignores me. This game against Worthing United still came out as a 1-1 draw with Worthing equalizing late on in the game.

We improved further with Liam’s first goal of the day and a 1-0 win against Sompting Youth. Again some great passing involved in the goal with every player on the pitch making a pass.

We then played Worthing Minors and won 2-0. The first goal coming from Jack on his debut tournament with a marvelous shot on the volley from way out on the right hand touchline looping over the keepers head into the opposite top corner. The second was a well struck drive from Jerome from outside the area.

The results in other games moved our way, and in our final group game to stay in second position and go through to the semi-finals we needed a 2-0 win. By half time we were still at 0-0 although the team seemed to be working patiently. With each half only 5 minutes not a lot of time remained. Liam early in the second half gave us a life line. Then with only around a minute to go Sam drove forward from defence and hit a super drive to put us through to the semi final.

The semi final against Hangleton Rangers was another tight affair with Liam scoring late in the first half. The second half seemed to drag on with all players maintaining a very stiff rear guard action as Hangleton Rangers piled on the pressure which finally was stifled.

To the final. Once again Hove Rivervale stood in front of us. However I feel that we had learnt a little about there players from the first game. Another tight affair followed which to brutally frank I believe that we had the better chances in. The game was finally won by Hove in the second half of extra time 1-0.

I feel and the results show that we are improving with each tournament and I hope by the end of this campaign that the boys should have some silverware to show.

Two things surprised me, the first that Ellias didn’t score. The second was how well George played. We know he can read the game well, but to add to that his calmness and passing ability started to show through.

Lastly a regret that I could not play George in the Semi or the Final as his sterling efforts helped others achieve good results. I do think however and said as much to George that I think the pace of the semi finals and finals would have become a problem for him.

Still, I have learnt two things myself this weekend, the first being that the confidence and belief of these boys has been growing since Christmas and seems to be growing further, the second, never trust Steve Ingram’s weather forecast!

Thank you once again to all the players and parents that made this weekend enjoyable.
