Horsham Park

Twin Oaks third game of the season saw them away at Horsham Park against Horsham Sparrows. A sunny September morning ensured that the match was again well attended by the Twin Oaks supporters and after the hassle of trying to find places to park their cars the away spectators were able to watch a commanding performance by their team.

On a sloping pitch, Twin Oaks playing downhill, made a good start to the game. Looking solid at the back they were able to build up the play from midfield and some intelligent through passes soon found them mounting several early attacks on the Horsham Sparrows goal.

With some neat passing play and terrific team commitment, Twin Oaks seemed to have shaken off the disappointment of last week’s game and were certainly looking like the team that had started the season so well in their opening game.

A little after 5 minutes into the game a well judged through ball into the space behind the Horsham Sparrows defence by Grant saw Luke run onto the pass, collect the ball, and make an excellent diagonal run towards goal.

He fired in a near post shot, the ball hit the net, but the unsure referee had judged the ball had gone into the side netting and signalled a goal kick. Some members of the crowd near to the goal were sure that it was a goal and although the game was allowed to continue the referee bizarrely, during the next stoppage of play, changed his mind and awarded the goal to Twin Oaks. 1-0 ahead after 8 minutes.

Twin Oaks continued to set the pace of the first half and you felt it was just a matter of time before a second goal was scored and on 20 minutes it was. A corner kick into the near post was headed on by a Sparrows defender only to find Ben in the six yard box. His cheeky flick lifted the ball over the goal keeper and into the net.

2-0 to Twin Oaks.

Although the home side tried to create some attacks of their own, the Twin Oaks team were able to easily break these down and quickly turn defence into attack. On the balance of play, and the fact that they were playing down the slope, Twin Oaks must have felt that they should have been more than two goals ahead as the game neared half-time, and they nearly were when Scott broke from the midfield only to see his well placed shot strike the underside of the crossbar. Another attack of an exciting first half saw Bradley’s excellent lob over the Sparrows keeper into the empty net disallowed for offside.

On the stroke of half-time some strong tackling and an unfair challenge by the home side saw Liam having to leave the field of play with an injury. Jack took Liam’s position for the remaining last few moments of the half.

This event somewhat marred an excellent first half display by Twin Oaks who went in at half-time 2-0 up.

Due to the injury to Liam Twin Oaks made a tactical change at half-time, with Murat, who put in a commendable hard working first half performance, being replaced by Matt. The Twin Oaks manager rallied his team asking them to forget about what had happened at the end of the first half and to carry on playing the football that had seen them dominate the game up until now.

Playing uphill Twin Oaks made the same excellent start to the second half as they had the first. With the ability to mount attacks from all areas of the pitch, Twin Oaks always looked dangerous every time they came forward, and with a hard working midfield and reliable defence Twin Oaks were never really under any threat or pressure from the opposition at any time during the game.

Another substitution early into the second half saw Luke make way for Cameron. This proved to be an inspired change as it was Cameron who scored Twin Oaks third goal within minutes of coming on. In fact Cameron went on to score a magnificent hat-trick as Twin Oaks ran riot in the second half.

Twin Oaks soon added a fourth goal, with a blistering shot from Jack from the edge of the penalty area. With further well taken goals from Harry (expertly placed shot into the corner of the net), Ben (low driven effort from just inside the box) and Bradley (with a calmly placed strike), Twin Oaks ran out triumphant 9-0 winners.

Horsham Sparrows created very little in the second half and their only real chance on goal was when the score stood at 6-0. A rare attacking move found them in behind the Twin Oaks defence, however the resulting shot by their striker was superbly saved by Aaron. Diving full stretch he was able to expertly palm the ball past the far post.

Twin Oaks had certainly entertained the crowd with their excellent team performance, however individual performances worthy of a mention were those of , Grant in the defence, Scott in the midfield and Cameron in attack.

I must however congratulate all of the Twin Oaks players, not just because the score was a resounding 9-0, but because of the way that they had played the “beautiful game” of football.

Well done lad’s I enjoyed every minute of it….
