After the mid-season break for Christmas and the New Year the second half of the season was to start with an away game against Billingshurst. Earlier in the season in the home fixture against Billingshurst, Twin Oaks had won 6-1. The game on that day was played out in warmth of the sun, however today’s encounter was to take place in very cold and wet weather conditions.

Unlike most of their games so far this season Twin Oaks did not start well, whether is was a case of too much Turkey and Christmas pudding over the festive season they found it hard to get into their normal rhythm of play.

Billingshurst were the team pushing forward from the start and it came as no surprise that they went 1-0 up after only 5 minutes of the game. A sloppy tackle on the edge of the Twin Oaks penalty area resulted in a foul and from the resulting free-kick the home side took the lead. The well taken free-kick left Aaron in goal with no chance as it flew into the net. Twin Oaks were 1-0 down.

A further goal from Billingshurst on 15 minutes, this time from open play made it 2-0. A thunderous shot from the right wing position found the corner of the net. 2-0 to Billingshurst.

This second goal seemed to prove the wake-up call that Twin Oaks needed and they now began to put together some attacking moves of their own. A through ball on 25 minutes found Bradley in the clear and from his shot the away side had pulled back a goal to make it 2-1. Another goal a minute later from Ben made it 2-2 and the first half comeback was complete. Twin Oaks could consider themselves lucky that this was the score at half-time as for 20 minutes of the first half they were not in the game at all.

A call for more effort at the half-time break by the manager saw Twin Oaks make a much better start to the second-half. The defence and midfield had seemed to get their act together and moving forward the attackers found more time and space to create a number of chances on goal.

Billingshurst still posing a threat in the early stages of the second-half must have been surprised by the half-time score as they probably felt they had already done enough in the first-half to win the game. But as they say in football it is a game of halves and it was certainly Twin Oaks who were now in the ascendancy.

After 18 minutes of the second half a fine run with the ball by Cameron found Ben in the Billingshurst penalty area who promptly applied the finishing touch to put Twin Oaks 3-2 ahead. This goal proved to be the crucial turning point in the game. Although at 3-2 the game is never over, Billingshurst seemed to have nothing left to offer.

Twin Oaks continued to push forward and with 2 minutes of the game left in a one on one with the goalkeeper Harry put away the fourth decisive goal of the game.

The match finished with Twin Oaks running out 4-2 winners in a game that they could have easily lost. It was only after learning the results of the other fixtures in their league that the significance of this victory became known.

This comeback win had put Twin Oaks top of the table, a position that they would not surrender for the rest of the season.

Well done lad’s, but try not to give us too many games like this.
