Maidenbower Utd 1

Loppetts Road

I must admit that I have been nervously looking forward to the return match against Maidenbower as they are a strong team with some big competitive players and we have not had as many competitive games as I would like to play well against such a good team. However, by the end it was nice to be able to put 3 more points between us and one of our closest rivals.

Although Maidenbower started by having more possession during the first 10 minutes we had more opportunities. Sam went close by hitting the bar after some neat passes and a threaded pass.

We then had the majority of play and although struggled a little more to overlap than we had two weeks previously we slowly started to assert some pressure resulting in Tom only just being offside after following up on a parried shot. Shortly after that a cross from the left hand side was deflected into the Maidenbower net by one of their own players.

Changes were made with over the course of the first half Jack coming on for Jason, Shaun for Ryan, and George for Sam.

We continued to battle and we the majority of the play continued to be in the Maidenbower half of the pitch. Our problems mainly related to long clearances from their goalkeeper which tested the defence. I was pleased with our heading ability overall however there are a small number of the team who are shying away from this side of the game and are not attacking the ball before it drops to the ground.

Once again in the second half Maidenbower came back strongly and during the first 10-15 minutes and looked dangerous until Lewis broke through on the right hand side of the area and finished neatly low to the goalkeepers right hand.

This seemed to change the balance of play and we again were in the ascendancy. Then against the run of play Maidenbower won a corner which had caused us problems throughout particularly with the two taller players that they had used in midfield came forward. The result was a header past Matt who had previously played exceptionally coming for crosses and clearing his lines, and pushing a couple of shots past the post.

With about seven minutes left both James and I were concerned that our heads may drop. However whereas last year I think you may have conceded an equalizer, this year you are a lot more confident in your own abilities and rightfully so.

Sam after a frustrating first half finished with two clinical finishes the best being from a cross which he met on the penalty spot on the half volley, striking the ball hard and low to the keeper’s left hand side.

An excellent finish to what at times was a nervy match.
