Hangleton Youth

Once again the Twin Oaks summer tour rumbles into action with a short trip down to the coast and the sunny Hangleton Rangers Tournament. You know that as soon as its 6-A-Side season the sun will be out once again (until Furngate that is!) and James and I will be suffering with sunburn. Today was no exception.

We went today with a very physically powerful side (with the slight exceptions of Josh and Jerome), including Connor playing his first 6 A Side tournament for us and Luke new to our ranks

The first game was against Preston Panthers and surprisingly we started quite quickly taking a 1-0 lead with one of Elliot’s rocket shots taking a slight deflection and going into the right hand side of the goal. We continued to push but with the games only 5 minutes each way we found it difficult to get a second. We were strong in defence with Elliott and Connor coping easily.

The second game was against Hangleton Rangers who were our hosts and whom we met last year in the semi final of Worthing Minors. Again another Elliott strike, which the Hangleton keeper said afterwards he did not want to get his hands on, settled the game. Although playing reasonably well there was not the fluidity of last year's performances as yet.

We proceeded to take on Worthing Utd whose players appeared to be around a foot smaller than most of ours! And yet their technique was excellent and they created as many chances as us. However, neither team scored, a point each was fair.

Bulkington Sports were next up and with both Josh and Lewis playing a little more touch play was in evidence albeit against one of the league strugglers and both scored. Josh forced home our first goal after some good interchange play from Lewis and Jerome. Lewis showed his quick feet to score the second.

The next game was against fellow league leaders Withdean Youth who have had a very successful season: the first half finished 0-0. Early in the second half Withdean scored and with each half only 5 minutes long this did not allow too long to get an equaliser which ultimately was beyond us.

We needed a win in the final game against Eastbourne Utd Colts to proceed in their place, rather than depending on their last result which was to be against Preston Panthers. Connor scored a scuffed, deflected shot under the keeper after a few minutes and we should have had more. Then shortly after half time a long throw went over our tallest defenders for one of their smaller players to creep in and head the ball home at the far post. This spurred us into overdrive and a number of headers flashed past the post and over the bar. Late in the match a shot from Connor was heading in when somehow one of their defenders volleyed the ball off of the line.

So ended our tournament.

I spoke on the Monday to the Hangleton Manager, and one of the organisers of the tournament, who confirmed that the winner of the tournament had come from one of the other groups.

He said "Yes our age group was won by, would you believe, Hove Park Colts who beat Withdean 3-1. Withdean scored first with about 2 minutes to go in normal time...they celebrated by running over and hugging all of their parents and it took about 2 minutes to re-start the game. Hove equalised in the last few seconds and then went on to win it in extra time...sweet!!"
