Cray Wanderers Football Festival

Flying the flag for Crawley , Twin Oaks Football Club recently took part in the Under 16’s section of the prestigious Cray Wanderers Youth Football Festival.

This annual pre-season event organised by the Rymans League based football club took place on one of the hottest days of the summer in Mottingham, South East London. With Twin Oaks being the only Sussex based side taking part, the tournament featured a number of London and Kent based clubs some of which boasted football league club academy-level players amongst their squads.

The group section of this highly competitive 11-A-Side tournament was played out on a league basis with the winners and runners-up from each of the two groups progressing through to the semi-final stages.

In their group matches Twin Oaks, through some outstanding teamwork and excellent football against some talented opposition, managed to deservedly finish top of their group by notching up two terrific wins against Parkwood FC and Southbank, 2-0 and 1-0 respectively, and by battling out two hard-fought 0-0 draws against Beckenham Atheletic and the tournament hosts Cray Wanderers.

At the semi-final stages Twin Oaks faced tough opposition in group runners-up Cray Valley . In an evenly matched contest both sides had their chances to win the game in normal time with Twin Oaks arguably having the best of the efforts on goal. The game however was to finish in a 0-0 draw meaning that progression through to the final was to be decided by a penalty shoot-out.

Unfortunately for Twin Oaks they eventually lost the shoot-out 5-3, but to exit the competition at the semi-final stages of a tournament that featured such recognised opposition was a real credit to the Crawley based club and certainly won the praise of not only their own coaching staff but also the managers of the other competing teams.

In a day that saw England win the cricketing Ashes, Twin Oaks, in terms of football, could certainly return home with their heads held high. Well done lads and good luck for the forth-coming season….
